On 4th Feb 2010, our college hosted a spectacular cultural program on the occasion of the inauguration of a very renowned organization
” SPIC MACAY “. SPIC MACAY, which stands for Society for Promotion of Indian Classical Music and Culture Amongst Youth, has been responsible for facilitating awareness amongst the youth regarding their historical cultural diversities. It seeks to conserve and promote an awareness of this rich and heterogeneous cultural tapestry amongst the youth of this country through focus on the classical arts, with their attendant legends, rituals and mythology.
The show commenced with the presidential address by the Chairman of the institution Prof. K. Shashikumar followed by the lightening of the lamp. This was later accompanied by a Presidential Address by our Principal Mr. Somi Sebastian and an introduction by Mr. Lokanath..
After this came the most awaited moment of the day- the Sarod. Filling the ears with exquisite musical notes was none other than renowned Sarod Player Partho Sarothy and accompanying this heavenly melody was Mr.Ashish Paul on the tabla.
Mr. Partho Sarothy is the student of the world-renowned Sarod artist Pandit Ravi Shankar. Mr. Sarothy started learning sarod at the young tender age of 10 and since then he has fallen in love with that instrument. He has performed all over the country and has extensive performance experience at various locations around the globe.
He began the performance by first familiarising us with the instrument. The sarod is a stringed musical instrument, used mainly in Indian classical music. Along with the sitar, it is the most popular and prominent instrument in Hindustani classical music. The sarod is known for a deep, weighty, introspective sound with sympathetic strings that give it a resonant, reverberant quality.
He began the performance with the basic dhrumar raag and took us through kyal raag. The chemistry between the artists was amazing. It seemed they were connected together-tied with the bond of music. As they shared with us the very essence of the beautiful music they created, we felt overwhlemed. Overwhelmed by the music that was presented to us. That one-an-half hour performance gave us an alltogether out of the world experience.
It was a truly memorable inauguration! And we hope to see such kinds of more performances in our college with the intiation of SPIC MACAY.
