We are celebrating the 22nd World Aids Day.
After it was conceived in August 1987, the first observation of the event happened in December 1st of 1988.From 2005 to 2010 the annual theme is “STOP AIDS.KEEP THE PROMISE”, with a yearly sub theme.Conferring the AIDS statistics published by UNAIDS we can see that 33. 4 million of the total world population is living with AIDS (2008 statistics).Even though this result suggest that, less than half of the world population is affected by AIDS it’s important that we should be made aware of this pandemic disease. Each individual should be made aware. Because by the same statistics we can see that per year 2.7 million people are newly infected.
So let’s try to understand AIDS.

WHAT IS AIDS???

AIDS or Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome is a disease that affect human immune system, Its caused by HIV Virus (Human Immuno deficiency virus).This disease reduces our immunity and thus the affected individual fall prey to opportunistic diseases.

WHAT CAUSES AIDS???

The HIV virus causes AIDS. But in the initial stages the affected person will not know that he/she is affected. When the HIV virus enters our body it destroys the T cells, macrophages and dendritic cells thereby affecting the immune system. Gradually the immune system is fully damaged to the extend that the affected person will die because of otherwise non dangerous types of diseases.

HOW IS IT TRANSMITTED???

• Sexual Transmission
• Exchange of body fluids
• Needle sharing
• Blood transfusion (Transmission through this method is fairly low in developed countries)
• Tattoos and body piercing.
• From affected mother to child

HOW CAN AIDS BE DIAGNOSED???

Can be detected by the HIV test. The venous blood is tested, in the fourth generation screening test, for the presence of anti-HIV antibody and HIV Antigen. The presences of HIV antigen or antibody suggest that the person is HIV positive. Further tests are done to confirm this result. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) test is very effective as it can detect infection in initial stages itself. However a routine checkup is always putting us in the safe side.

HOW CAN IT BE PREVENTED???

• Protected sex reduces the chance of HIV infection in the heterosexuals and homosexuals
• Do not share needles
• For people who can come in contact with affected persons body fluids (doctors, nurses etc) should take necessary precautions.
• HIV is transmitted from mother to child in the last months of pregnancy and during child birth, giving birth by cesarean section prevents this.
• Avoid breast feeding if mother is affected and child is not.

TREATMENT FOR AIDS

At present no cure is available for AIDS. However antiviral therapy helps the affected to lead a some what normal life for 4-12 years. But once this treatment is stopped treatment resistant virus can get formed. These medicines are costly and have some very unpleasant side effects, but still it is the only alternative to an early death. In the absence of antiviral treatment, in the absence of anti retroviral therapy the time for progression from HIV infection to AIDS is 9-10 years and the survival time after developing AIDS is only 9.2 months.

AIDS DO NOT SPREAD

• By casual contacts
• By sharing clothes Etc used by the affected and
• By kiss that does not cause any oral injury.

AIDS is not a disease that affects homosexuals and drug users.

The ruling UPA government headed by the congress was formed after the 2004 general election when no party or alliance had a clear majority. it was formed with the sole aim of keeping BJP away from power. It came to power with the external support of the left and was under the guidelines of CMP (Common Minimum Program). Last year Left parties withdraw its support on the nuclear deal and with the help of SP(Samajwadi Party) the government surpassed the non confidence motion.

Advantages: it has a wide range of parties in its alliance which will be a blessing in the coalition era where no party is going to have a clear majority. There is no prominent Anti-Incumbency feeling in the national level, support of regional parties all over India, no other prominent issues against government, a huge number of leaders, secular outlook, stock market picking up, inflation down, Farmer’s loan wavier, schemes for the minority and women.

Disadvantages: No prime ministerial candidate as such because of the factions within UPA. All head of the prominent Parties in UPA has come up openly with the ambition for top post. Parties although have seat sharing in regions there is no nationwide seat sharing and many parties are contesting against each other in many places. Only a post poll alliance is possible here. Prominent parties like RJD, LJP, NCP, SP are not having a strong view or stand to b in the alliance. LJP,RJD, SP has already formed seat sharing  pact and formed the silent FOURTH FRONT.

Expected regions of support: J&K(Jammu Region), Haryana, North-Eastern States, Andhra, Orissa, Kerala, Bihar, Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, Utranchal.

Indian National Congress (INC)

The oldest & the ruling party and as the party heading the Governing coalition, it has to its advantage the peoples trust. But it has lost its base in many states and it has to lay on the mercy of many regional parties in case of seats. With the secular approach and development agenda it has a nice chance to come into power after election. But it has no strength to win the majority and walk straight to the parliament. It still may have to depend on UPA and other post poll alliance even the left.

Star Campaigners: Sonia Gandhi & Rahul Gandhi

Advantage: secular nature, development agenda, support of many regional parties, minority and rural & agriculture welfare schemes and farmers dept relief package.

Disadvantage: common feeling of the PM being a puppet of the congress president, root level functioning of the party not strong, light on terror, economic crises, fluctuating price of oil and other commodities, regional parties domination, inflation.

Influential Areas: Nationalist party. Strengths in Kerala, Maharashtra, Andhra, North Eastern States, Haryana, Uttaranchal

Rashtriya Janatha Dal (RJD)

PM candidate: NIL ( But Lalu has openly expressed his wish to b the PM)

The party that ruled Bihar for 15 years is also known for its corrupt and criminal back ground. It has a good influence in yadav community. It has 24 MPs nw and can be a decisive in this election. It was blamed for the Bihar’s under development during the 15 year rule, but that image has been changed by Lalu by making record profit to the Indian Railways during her tenure as Rail Minister.

Star Campaigners: Lalu Prasad Yadav & his family

Advantages: cast politics and minority votes, development in railways, support of the influential Yadav cast, tie up with SP and LJP.

Disadvantages : corrupt and criminal background, development in Bihar by JD(U) government, several cases still pending agains the past 15year rule in Bihar , cause for the back drop of Bihar during its rule of 15 years.

Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam(DMK)

The ruling party in Tamil Nadu will have its say in any government due to the 40 seats in Tami Nadu. Although the DMK came to power with the sweet promises to its people this time it faces Anti-Incumbency. It also lost the support of PMK . Tamils Nadu’s start power politics cant be predicted as many stars has come up with there own parties or extended their support to many parties in public. Ram Sethu, war against LTTE, water crises will all play its card in this election.

Advantages: its open support to Tamils in Sri Lanka, strong stand against Karnataka in Cauvery water dispute and against Kerala in Mullaperiyar Dam issue, controlling price hike, new investments.

The Sharad Powar led NCP which shares power with congress in Maharashtra is a party which has stands on all the alliances. The party formed from the congress because of Sonia becoming the Congress president is strong in Maharashtra and North Eastern states. This time it shares seats with congress in Maharashtra but has talks with Shiv Sena, third front and left, and also with the Fourth front. Its stand can only be understood after the polls.

Advantages: secular image, packages to farmers, eltrification in rural areas, rural development.

Disadvantages: Anti-Incumbency, failure of security, law and order, farmers suicide, less infrastructure growth, roads and drains in Mumbai and other cities.

Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM)

JMM formed to carve the Jharkhand state is presently in the ruling coalition and has its chief minister. It’s a party which is having backing from tribal’s. Its an infamous party due to its corrupt political approach and switching its stand from political side to side for money. Its political agenda is up liftment of Jharkhand and the tribals

Disadvantages: corruption, criminal back ground, switching sides for money, Anti-incurbency

It’s a typical Bihari party which has a history of switching sides for power. It has lost a major number of leaders in the last state election. It has shared power in Bihar. It has a huge support of Muslims.

Advantages: Minority support, development agenda, less corrupted and criminalized.

Disadvantages: a major number of leaders and support has been shifted to JD(U) in last election. Development agenda is not match with Nitish Kumar’s governance. Polarization of Muslim and Paswan cast votes, switching sides for power

Samajwadi Party(SP)

Party chief: Mulayam Singh Yadhav

PM candidate: Nil(Mulayam Singh Do eye the top post)

This is a star fled party in UP which has more number of Film stars in it than any other party. This is also a party that has a huge support of the industrialists. The party was in the third front and was a chief party in it until the Non Confidence Motion came last year. The congress which kept SP away till then joined hands with them to fight the common enemy Mayawathi (BSP). SP has a good support among muslims and Yadhavs in UP.

Star Campaigner: Jaya Bachan and family, Sunjay Dutt and family, Anil Ambani, Mulayam Singh, Amar Singh

Advantages: the huge fan base of the film stars and support of industrialist, anti- incumbency against BSP can turn into votes to SP, industrialist view, minority support

Trinamool Congress(TMC)

Chief: Mamata Banerjee

PM candidate: UPA’s PM Candidate (Read Manmohan Singh)

The sole party fighting against the Left in all fronts in West Bengal. They were with NDA and opted out after the 2004 elections. They have good influence in WB. They got the boost after the Nandigram and singur issues where they led the war front along with the parties against the Left. But still they couldn’t show a good result in the last Vidan sabha elections. TMC  have tied up with congress to fight their common enemy Left in the Lok Sabha elections

Star Campaigner: Mamata Banerjee

Advantages: the only party in WB who has a good voice and support other than the left here, they have got the boost from the Nandigram and Singur issues, Anti-incurbency and dictatorial politics of the left, the neo-socialistic measures of the Left are opposed by the farmers

Disadvantages: The left still have its strong base, TMC cudnt yet penetrate to the cities, its influence are still constrained to some pockets, no real issue against Left at present.

Areas Of influence: West Bengal

Most of  us are going to the polling booth for the first time this April 16. our nation the great INDIA is the biggest democracy in the world (china the biggest populated nation is  communist nation). I used to get thrilled when my parents went for voting in my child hood. Myself  and my friends eagerly waited for that big day to come when we can vote. But recently when i was with my friends, v talked a about the same voting process. half of them didn’t want to vote, some others don’t kw whom to vote and some others didn’t kw why to vote. i was disappointed on hearing this. v call ourselves men and women, v cry out for our freedom and rights, v say v r responsible citizens of India and patriotic so on so fore, but v are note ready or v dnt kw y to make this small contribution that decides our motherlands future, our future, the future of generations to come.

Friends let me tell u one thing, the democracy and the right to choose our own government is the greatest of all rights granted to us by our constitution. many countries and more than half of the world population doesnt have this right. our democracy is 60 years old its mature enough now and now its our turn to unleash the true value and power of democracy. v all call foul on the political parties and most of the youngsters say that all parties are equally corrupted and equally worse and so whom to vote to power, our one vote cnt make any change is what many of the youngsters believe. recent elections we have seen if the voting percentage is more the actual gap between the winning and loosing party is small. so the election will b tight only if the votes are more, if the participation of the citizen is more. v have seen some not so good MP’s & MLA’s getting voted to power just becos the voting percentage was less.

Recent surveys has shown that in constituencies with equally bad candidates of major parties geting voted to powers is just bcos of poor voting percentage. this is bcos the people think that both are equally bad and sme if they vote or not some one among them wil only get elected then y shud i waste my time and energy going to vote? this mentality has to b changed bcos if v dnt vote for wat ever reason its indirectly two vote for the winner(bcos that one vote that u dnt vote shoud have gone to the opponent, ie u are not only reducing one vote of the opponent but also reducing one vote less to climp for the winner).

then another thing is the ignorance about the Indian politcs. there are frinds among us who dosnt kw the candidates in there constituency or not even knowing which constituency they belong. its very poor of those friends. just check out urself. these has to b made by oneself. any way i wil try to put history and other details of the political parties and the candidates of the Kerala and nation wide in the posts to come. i think that can help u to make the rigt deciton why, and for whom to vote. vote for the Nation first then vote for ourself.

I don’t know how much true the news is, but it has been heard that, electronics industries(?) are ready to cut down their global emission rates. But unfortunately, only SHARP,FUJITSU SIEMENS,and PHILIPS show full support for this venture.all the other companies make meaningless statements about global emission reductions and have no plans to make absolute cuts themselves.but its now essential because of the overwhelming climatic disturbances all over the world, major electronic companies have to show some responsibilities rather then fluttering around.

With the aim of bringing awareness among the people , GREENPEACE has ranked the MNC’S according to their CLIMATIC LEADERSHIP.

With a highscore of around 6, NOKIA IS AT THE TOP.it is followed by SONY ERICSON,TOSHIBA and SAMSUNG.

FSC and LGE are a little bit better than MOTOROLA,SONY and PANASONIC(at the back).

Unfortunately, PHILIPS, jumped down very steps, with high carbon emision rates. SHARP is followed by ACER and DELL then .

You may ask what the heck are they doing when I says that MICROSOFT actually has no intention to turn GREEN with the ever lowest score below 3.LENOVO ,APPLE and HP are at better positions than MS.

Apple has also recently show leadership on removing the worst toxic substances with new ipods free of toxics brominated flame retardants and pvc.

So while shopping for new gadgets please think about you, your health, and if possible about the MOTHER EARTH.

We all know that the MLA’s and MP’s in INDIA has fund which amounts to lakhs each year which is rarely used fully, even if used, they are rarely used for something useful. the funds are granted for the regional developments but our legislators and parliamentarians use it mostly to fill their pocket or to make some small stuff and write their names in huge letters, for publicity.

This particular picture has been taken by me near the KAYAMKULAM railway station. this poor ambulance  was donated by the the exMP and present KPCC president RAMESH CHENNITALA. I am not sure which year this has been bought but from the model of the vehicle and registration its sure its around 2000-2001. I am seeing this poor fellow parked in this pathetic condition near a workshop near kayamkulam railway station for the last 4 years (I am seeing this on every monday morning when i come by train since i joined this college). I dont know what happend to this ambuance. Any way around 10 lakhs of the TAX payer’s money is lieing on the street in the rain and sun for atleast 4 years. i dnt know how many more years will this has to stay till it get a treatment. As per now the ambulance need an ambulance!!

Raj Thackeray of MNS(Maharashtra Navnirman Sena) recently created rages in public and media by discriminating the North Indians staying in Maharashtra. Actually this was the same tactics(nasty politics) used by Bal Thackeray of Shiv Sena in the sixties to gain hold over the people of Maharashtra. The only difference being , he discriminated the South Indians staying in Maharashtra, accusing them as the reason for the lack of job oppurtunities for the Maharashtrians. Thus he could gain hold over the public by his divisive politics. While the crude parochialism of the Shiv Sena and MNS is known, what is lamented is that even all-India parties like Congress have not done anything to suppress the feeling of sub-nationalism. Even in the sixties, the Congress party was a mute spectator to the vandalism shown by Shiv Sena. In such a crunch situation of hue & cry, why is Vilasrao Deshmukh easing himself when his grip over the situation is loosening. Why is being unqualified support given to the police by R.R Patil(state’s home minister), which led to the lynching of a labourer from U.P & earlier shooting of a Bihari youth in Mumbai. This comes as a shocking deterioration in Mumbai’s law & order situation. These situations could be tackled in a better way without actually killing the Bihari youth, as he was just a distracted youth. If this could be seen as a reply to those whoever taking law in their hands, then such replies should be first meted out with Raj Thackeray’s goondas. Taking a real time analysis, the police & the anti social elements have brought disgrace to the city(tinsel town)which was once known for its cosmopolitan  culture and the fault lies with the nasty politicians who do not mind playing games with the lives of innocent people in their actual quest for raw bloody power.

So what is all this going on in a sixty year old secular & democratic country ?. What has actually happened to our people, to us- who have actually taken arms against our own people on the dictations of myopic politicians ?. So when did creepy terms like ‘sub nationalism’ began cropping in our nation ?. Such a shameless act has propped up the question ” are we Indians in India ? “. So this is time to to sit & think with a cool head- against whom we have taken arms & on who’s advice and then to act. B’coz these shameless acts happen & leave a scar on India & the losers are not our god mans- ‘the politicians’, but the hapless victims of the resultant violence.

Let us hope the movies like”Deshdrohi” where the hero(from Bihar) actually opposes the dictations of MNS- fiss out the tension in Maharashtra.
