Well! This is one question that has been haunting me over the past week. I was busy pouring over my record work and notes preparing myself for the practical exams of my 4th sem.

What led me to think about this is the type of questions which we got.

First up for me was the Logic System Design Lab. 6 of us were standing in queue to take our question paper. It so happened that my friend who was standing before me moved out of the line to take his IC Pin-out diagram or something and thus I moved to his place and he moved behind me. I got an easy question to design an Astable Multivibrator (which was supposed to be picked by my friend) and my friend got a difficult question. I got the output on first try whereas he got only a partial output.

Same happened with Data Structures Programming Lab. Though everyone in a batch gets the same question, the degree of difficulty of the question for each batch was different. We got to implement Priority Queue (in a little twisted question) whereas some batches got direct questions like implementing ‘Merge Sort’ and ‘Quick Sort’.

Though I got full outputs on these labs, why am I complaining?

Last sem, in C Programming Lab, we got a difficult question to read and manipulate data from files. The question was indirect that it even confused the external examiner who in turn confused me. One batch got a question to input a number, find if it is even or odd, prime or composite and its factorial (+1 stuff). I passed but with low marks which affected my GPA badly.

So this leads to my question. Does the question one receives depend on his luck and there by does his performance also depends on his luck? If so, how can one judge a person’s programming ability with questions of varying difficulty?

Hands off to the management for giving a token of appreciation to the toppers for that’s indeed boosted up their confidence level to attain more heights as what they have achieved now.

We are talking about the toppers of the first year batch 2007.All of you would have got the details from the earlier posts that this year these students have simply excelled in their academics.After CET(trivandrum-with 88% pass),we are the second position holders as we have got 86% pass.This indeed is a previlage for we SBCEians and the students are to be indeed congratulated for their success.
It would not be fare if we don’t mention the topprs from each branch who are eligible to be specially congratulated for clearing all those 10 paper with high scores.

So the management thought of giving a token of appreciation which was not expected until the interview began.Sri K.K.Sivadasan (Treasurer) on behalf of the management presented the students with the cash prize and showered his blessings upon them which was much worthier than the amount given.

This was actually a surprise for everybody because such an incident had never happened so far.Such a kind of approach from the management is sure to inspire the students even more. So we would like to thank the kind hearted attitude of our management for encouraging these students for their brilliant performence.

Our s5 results came in the last week of june, many of us wanted to improve our marks to boost the GPA. But we were in great confusion as the detailed mark list was not published along with the result and the last date for applying for the improvement was already declared .The detailed mark list published only on the 30^th June(the last date for applying was over) and we got the news that the last date for application extended. We clarified this news by making a call to the university from our college office.

Then it was my turn – going to the university to remit the required fees and submit the application. I took the responsibility as I love travelling. I collected the fees and application from all my friends (a total of 8 ) who wanted to improve. I went to the university on 2^nd July 2008. First went to the information counter and clarified the news of extending the last date of application. I remitted the fees and submitted all the 8 application forms (including mine). There was an interesting incident on the way back home and you can see it from my blog http://vosree.wordpress.com/2008/07/17/indian-railway-comedy/ Every thing was fine and we got the hall tickets at correct time and done the improvement exams (the exams were postponed two times) and most of us are sure that we will improve them.

Every thing changed when I got a call from one f ma friend last Saturday (I was on my way back home from the great blogcampkerala ) saying that she got a memo from the university citing that she didn’t remitted the required amount of Rs 310 for improvement (we remitted Rs 260 each which is the right amount with out any fine) .And the university want us to remit Rs 100 more (310-260=50 and another 50 rupees for not remitting the correct amount). No longer did I wait, I got the same thing on Monday. Another friend got it on Saturday itself and in short all of us got the memo before Tuesday. Not only for those 8 people whose application was taken to the university by this poor young man but for all who remitted the fees on 2^nd july.(I hope same is the case with students from all other colleges also). We enquired about this in our college office and we got the answer that this may be due to some mistake and we were advised to go to the university and clarify it. We are going to Thiruvananthapuram tomorrow and not sure about the outcome.Any way we need to spend another 200 Rupees as travelling expense. lets wait and see.I will write about the outcome afterwards.
